2. Urciuoli, 2012 “Language and Race” pp. 151-153

3. Agar, 1994 “Culture Blends”

Readings Annotations are activities meant to help you keep up with the readings, identify key concepts, arguments, and ideas, summarize and analyze them.

For full points, annotations must be maximum 2-3 double-spaced pages long, and address all the 3 components below. Make sure you number the 3 components in your text.

Each annotation will comprise three components:

1) One to two paragraphs (10 lines) for each reading providing summaries of the readings with a focus on arguments, main points, and evidence. In order to write this component, try to answer the following questions: What are the main points of the reading? Is the author making an argument? If yes, what is the argument and how it is supported (i.e., what evidence does the author have to prove their point)? Try to write this part in such a way that if you were to read your own text years later you would understand what it is about. This part is worth 4 points.

2) One paragraph (10 lines) addressing one or two connections you see among the readings. In order to write this component, try to focus on an idea or a concept that is discussed in the readings. How is each author addressing that idea? How does it compare and contrast from one text to another? Please do not restate information from point 1, but write a focused analysis of a specific common point in the readings. This part is worth 2 points.

3) One last paragraph (10 lines) should be dedicated to a short excerpt of your choice from one of the texts. Please highlight this excerpt in italics, copy it in your assignment (this does not count towards the page number), and comment on it by justifying your choice. Try to address the following questions: Why did it catch your attention? How important it is for the text? What does it mean? Can you apply/use it to understand your life or the world around you? For full points make sure you answer each of these questions. This part is worth 2 points.
