TBR Outcomes
I.1. Analyze and evaluate oral and/or written expression by listening and reading critically for elements that reflect an awareness of situation, audience, purpose, and diverse points of view.
I.2. Distill a primary purpose into a single, compelling statement and order and develop major points in a reasonable and convincing manner based on that purpose.
II.2. Explain the ways in which humanistic and/or artistic expression throughout the ages expresses the culture and values of its time and place.

1. First, your objective is to establish what American Identity means to a writer at the end of our readings up to this point (Paine, Crevecoeur, Knight, Byrd, or Franklin – only);
2. Second, show how this writer builds on what has come before by examining analogues and correlatives to the ideas of earlier writers. For example, you might illustrate what it means to be American according to Crevecoeur’s ideas at the end of the 18th century, then show how these ideas compare to two earlier writers such as Bradford and Winthrop (consider ideas of religion, freedom, community, or work).
