It is 9:00 A.M., when your crew is dispatched to a potential chemical spill at a nearby semiconductor manufacturing facility. Upon your arrival, the Incident Commander (IC) of the sire emergency response team reports that a worker intentionally mixed sodium cyanide and sulfuric acid in a large container on an isolated 20’X20’ storage room. The IC Gives you a hand written note from the distraught worker, indicating that the chemical release was an apparent suicide attempt.
There is a security camera monitoring the room, and the IC tells you it is clear that the worker is on the floor next to the bucket, not moving. The entire building has been evacuated. The IC urges you to make an immediate rescue. The IC hands you to MSDS-one for sodium Cyanide and one for 97 percent sulfuric acid. After reading the MSDSs for both chemicals, you realize that the mixture of these two chemicals liberates cyanide gas, which is toxic by all routes of entry.
Based in this information what action(s) I would you take first? To safely enter the storage room to access the worker, which level of protection would you choose to wear?
