Task
Machines and Intelligence Assignment 1
Read pages 44-57 of Jack Copeland’s “Artificial Intelligence: A Philosophical Introduction” and then write a short essay (maximum 1000 words) in your own words in which you:
1. Explain Copeland’s view of the Turing Test. Make clear whether he:
a. accepts the test as a legitimate test of whether a machine can think,
b. rejects the test as a legitimate test of whether a machine can think, or
c. believes the test can be modified to become an acceptable test of whether a
machine can think.
Briefly explain Copeland’s reasoning in relation to these options.
2. Briefly explain Copeland’s own position with respect to the question of whether or not we may be able to develop machines that can be genuinely said to think, summarising his argument.
3. If Copeland’s position, as you have explained it in response to 2., is correct, what social and ethical implications do you think this will have for AI machines in the future? Give reasons for your answer.
