Topic: Cultural Differences

Paper details:

College in the United States refers to the educational institution one attends after high school. In France, however, it refers to the level of education that occurs before high school, which is middle school or junior high school.

Breakfast in Puerto Rico will likely include a hot cereal, such as harina de avena (oatmeal) or crema de maiz (cornmeal cereal). In Mexico, however, it more than likely refers to huevos rancheros (corn tortillas topped with fried eggs, cheese, and salsa with a side of refried beans), and in Senegal, it will refer to a baguette of French bread, Nutella, and a cup of tea or coffee.

Market in the United States usually refers to a place where you can purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, but in Senegal it refers to an open air “Mall” where you can purchase fruits and vegetables, and also clothing, shoes, electronics, office supplies, and so on.

Can you think of other ways that the same concepts have very different meanings in other countries or among cultural groups different than your own?
