Mapping Exercise

  1. Choose a city that you know well (the current population must be greater than 100,000; you can retrieve the population at www.census.gov). Find a digital map of the city or metropolitan area that you will use as a ‘basemap’. You may use an online service such as Google Maps, but you must make certain that your map is appropriately scaled and neatly presented. Next, illustrate spatially on the map, using digital or manual drawing, the evolution of the four major transportation eras described by Muller in “Transportation and Urban form: Stages in the Spatial Evolution of the American Metropolis”.
  2. Off limits: do not choose New York City (the metropolitan area is too complicated to effectively convey in this assignment) or Buffalo. All other cities (with current population greater than 100,000) are acceptable.
  3. Provide a narrative description of your modified city map that includes: (1) an overview of the areas on the map you added that signify the major transportation areas (approximately 125 words); (2) how you project is similar to or different from the information provided in Muller’s “Transportation and Urban form: Stages in the Spatial Evolution of the American Metropolis” (approximately 125 words); (3) focus on a particular city block that you know well, and explain how the major eras in the urban transportation system (walking city, tracked city, automobile city) are present or not present (approximately 125 words).
