The focus of Week 7 is on Nurse of the Future (NOF) competencies, managing change and complexity, ethical considerations, and managing ethical challenges as a leader. Note that leadership is among the competencies needed for future nurses. The NOF leadership competencies state that nurses will influence the behavior of individuals or groups of individuals within their environment in a way that will facilitate the establishment and acquisition/achievement of shared goals. Northouse (2018) suggest that leadership has a moral dimension and that leaders have a responsibility to use their authority for the common good. Respected leaders demonstrate conference between their character and actions. The interactive questionnaire in Chapter 12 of the Northouse text provides the opportunity for you to determine and analyze your ethical leadership style. You will share these findings in the discussion board for this week.
Your nurse leader interview assignment is a synthesis of all of the leadership concepts presented in the course. The goal is that you learn from your interviewee and are inspired to seek out leadership opportunities and build on the insight and knowledge gained in this course
By the end of this week, you will be able to:
Instruction for the paper. Interview a master’s prepared nurse leader (chief nurse, associate chief nurse, director, supervisor, manager), a master’s prepared nurse with leadership responsibilities (nurse educator, nurse quality specialist, nurse risk manager, nurse case manager, etc.), or advanced practice nurse with leadership responsibilities (clinical nurse specialist, nurse anesthetist, nurse midwife, or nurse practitioner).
Analyze the leader’s role as it relates to a minimum of five of the major course concepts addressed (ethics in leadership, emotional intelligence, communication, conflict resolution, change theory, cultural competence/diversity, labor relations management, leadership models, management theory, motivational theory, Nurse of the Future competencies, interprofessional collaboration, and team building).
Provide a narrative summary of your interviewee’s responses to each of the concepts (but not a verbatim account) of the interview. Incorporate references to provide support and analyze the concepts you discussed. Include your impression of congruence between the leader’s self-reflection and your personal observations of demonstrated leadership.
Include the following in your paper:
Your paper should utilize 10–12 scholarly references.
Nurse Leader: NURSE MANAGER.
Karen. BSN, CCRN.
She is the Nurse manager of the hospital where I work. Am also a registered nurse.
She reports directly to the Director of Nursing
She has been a nurse for 37 years, was a shift supervisor and a unit manager before her current position as the hospital nurse manager.
Her predominate model/theory of leadership is Democratic style of leadership. Rather than control the followers (nurses) she works with us, she treats everyone fairly, without putting herself above the nurses.
Even though she reports directly to the DON, she is well respected within the organization (hospital) she was awarded the Nurse Manager of the year award last year, went to the cooperate headquarters In Alabama to receive the award.
My personal philosophy/style/model (democratic) aligns well with her kind of leadership style.
Evaluation:
Leaders behavior- she is well liked, very respectful, dependable and polite.
Strength: Nursing skills and good judgement.
Challenges/weakness- She tries to please everyone all the time. DO NOT KNOW HOW TO SAY NO.
