Read Aloud

Create a lesson plan for an Interactive Read Aloud. Your lesson plan should be detailed based on a suitable book for a target group of young ESL learners.
Conduct an interactive read aloud in school or via video presentation to be shared in class online. Make sure you use a variety of voices, accents, and delivery modes to motivate listeners’ enjoyment and attention to story.

PART 1:

Select a children’s book (fiction or factual) suitable for a specific target group of ESL learners. (the book has to be an award winning, the book has to be shared with the class- so if possible to have it online or shared in a presentation)
Provide information about the book: author/illustrator/title/publisher.
Write a rationale explaining why the book is suitable for reading to a specific group of ESL learners. Use appropriate criteria for selecting children’s books to support your reasons. (200 words approx.)
Provide information about the target group of ESL learners. Include grade level, gender, curriculum, literacy resources available in the school and home. State why the book is suitable for this specific group. Explain the cultural context behind the book, if needed. (100 words approx.)

PART 2:

Create a Lesson Plan for a Read Aloud using the following headings:
Lesson Objectives: i. Linguistic ii. Other (i.e. cross-curricular objectives, and/or cognitive, affective, and psychomotor objectives.)
List of Materials
Introduction to the Read Aloud: Teacher highlights the author, illustrator and title. Teacher activates prior knowledge. Write step-by-step instructions, including the exact words the teacher will say, and clear information about what the learners will do. Include prediction opportunities.
Body of the Read Aloud: Write step-by-step instructions for reading the story, with specific page numbers highlighted. Write the exact words the teacher will say, and the exact questions that will be asked. Include prediction, summarizing and opinion opportunities for students.
Language Features: Give detailed information on how specific vocabulary and/or grammar and/or pronunciation features of the story will be taught or highlighted during the Read Aloud.
Materials/Activities: Create appropriate activities, worksheets, or templates for the teacher and the students to use during/after the read aloud.
Wrap-up: Write step-by-step instructions, including the exact words the teacher will say, and provide clear information about what the learners will do.

Very Important Tips:

It has to be interactive so the students can be with you.

All reasons for selection of the book are relevant, appropriate and insightful.  Reasons are well supported with appropriate references to the literature. Clear connections are always made between the target group of young learners and the selected book.

All individual lesson objectives and materials are clearly described, are relevant, appropriate, and achievable. (Materials has to be available so when I do the read aloud in front of the class I can get it to the students.)

All step-by-step instructions are clear and complete, and include the exact words the teacher will say (the words have to be fun for the students, like “hello my superhero’s”), with full attention to accurate use of English. Prediction, summarizing, critical thinking, and opinion opportunities are all present and appropriate.

All vocabulary, and/or grammar, and/or pronunciation teaching strategies are clear, logical, and complete, and all of the words/phrases selected are appropriate.

All materials and activities are included, and all are complete, relevant, and appropriate for the target group, and are creative.

Reading is always fluent, and eye contact is consistently maintained throughout the read aloud. (This will be for me when you finish the paper I will do the read aloud to a class of students)

Some example that the professor gave us:
This example is really good that you can see and get a lot of information from, BUT it has to be creative.
