1.1.4 Context
The United Kingdom (UK) has an ageing population (Oliver, Foot and Humphries, 2014). With this comes health challenges, including dementia (Prince et al, 2013). Dementia is a disease that impacts on the cognitive functioning of individuals and can result in individuals requiring care in nursing homes (Baker et al, 2015). To facilitate health and wellbeing, person centred care (PCC) could be of benefit (Stafford, Lawrence and Corbett, 2014).
1.1.5 Aims and objectives
This randomised controlled trial (RCT) has a primary objective to determine whether the WHELD intervention improves quality of life (QoL) for individuals with dementia in care home settings compared to usual care.
Secondary objectives:
⦁ Determine whether the WHELD intervention reduces: global deterioration, behavioural symptoms, psychological symptoms, use of antipsychotic drugs, pain, mortality, unmet needs, and improves: carer-individual relationships, a person-centred environment, and which is cost-effective (Whitaker et al, 2014).
