If the story of America between 1810s and 1865 is one that reveals both the expansion of freedom and its limitations, what were the main historical developments in that story?

Draw on information from Chapters 8-14 of The American Yawp and FOUR of the primary source documents that I have asked questions about in the quizzes on Chapter 8-14. See below for the full list of documents and Appendix A for the essay rubric.

In addition to an introductory paragraph that outlines your main thesis/argument and a Conclusion that summarizes your main points and key arguments, you should structure your essay to address the following questions (in other words write a paragraph of between 200 and 250 words in response to each of these questions and in this order):

 

1) Did western expansion and the Market Revolution expand Americans’ freedom?

2) Did the democratic and social reform movements of the 1820s-1840s increase Americans’ freedoms or merely expose how some groups were victims of prejudice?

3) What role did race, slavery, and political ideology play in causing the Civil War?

4) Did the Civil War lead to an expansion of freedoms? Did it expose freedom’s limitations?
