It is reasonable to assume the Americans are primarily utilitarian and judge the morality of an act by the outcomes and not by the act itself. However, many of the values that underpin the notion of justice – such as Due process, evidentiary rules, etc. – are deontological. How does this Contradiction affect leaders’ ability to establish an ethical foundation in his/her criminal justice agency.
Discuss how you would apply power in your leadership role to impact the culture and the practiced ethical behaviors of the staff in your agency. To what extent does the possibility of multiple cultures in your agency confound your effort?

Discuss the practical value of understanding organizational culture in order to having a deeper understanding of how organizations and its members behave. How can a comprehensive understanding of organizational ethics lead to being ethical leaders?
We know from research that observations and/or observers can change the Phenomena we are studying. To what extent do you think the current emphasis on “accountability” is affecting the ethics of practitioners, managers and leaders in criminal justice organizations?
Assignment # 4:
Students are expected to produce a 5-10 page paper with at least 10 citations from criminal justice academic journals. The following are recommended topics for the research papers.
Compare and contrast the administrative system of justice with the due process system. Determine the impact each system would have on the ethics of criminal justice practitioners.
Develop a detailed plan of action to develop ethical leaders for criminal justice organization.
Produce a literature review on culture and ethics, in law enforcement, adult or juvenile correctional officer, prosecutors/judges adult or juvenile probation officers, or a criminal justice professional group of your choice (make sure you choose a group that has been subjected to extensive research). Demonstrate a research plan to evaluate the effectiveness of recruiting and training on the ethics and moral behavior of criminal justice practitioners – choose the practitioners group in your interest area.
Demonstrate a research plan to determine the difference between and agency’s espoused values and its actual ethical framework.
