The portfolio consists of four sections. The overall word limit is 2,000 words, so you should
write 450–550 words for each section (they don’t have to be the same length, so use your
judgement). Each section must contain citations, and there must be a single reference list at
the end of the portfolio. This must be organized as one list, arranged alphabetically by author. The references list does not count towards the word
count.
Each section of the portfolio will be marked using the marking criteria. The final mark will be
an average of marks in each section.
1. Forms of cultural transmission
Write a short reflective essay on your personal experience of each form of cultural
transmission.
2. Culture and Gender
Choose two cultural contexts that differ greatly in terms of differences between boys and
girls socialization. Discuss the possible factors affecting these differences.
3. Culture and the Self
1. Score yourself on the two self–construals using
Singelis’ (1994) measure.
2. Write a short reflective essay on your scores, after having addressed the points below:
– Compare your scores with a peer. Do they differ? How?
– Do you think your scores are in the range you would have expected for yourself? E.g., are
you surprised you scored higher on one than on the other?
– Do you mostly agree with the author’s way of thinking about and measuring the self–
construals? Why and why not?
– Refer to the literature to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of studying/testing
self– construals.
– How are self–construals changing in the globalizing world of today?
4. Culture and Health
1. Choose a psychology article that is centered around the theme of culture and health.
2. Critique the article, for its scope, perspectives/conceptualization, findings and conclusions.
5. Culture and Organizations
1. Check where the UK scores in Hofstede’s dimensions: https://www.hofstede–
insights.com/country–comparison/the–uk/
2. Write some advice for people who plan to move to the UK from abroad for work, or for
non–British managers doing international business with a UK counterpart. Come up with at
least two tips for each of the original four dimensions. Give specific examples and explain
how they could be implemented.
–Don’t just make a bullet–point list of tips, but write in a semi–narrative way, without forgetting
academic references (first of all to Hofstede, but not only).
–Be critical: take into account Hofstede’s dimensions and where the UK scores as a basis,
but try to go beyond that. Are there circumstances, contexts, times, where flexibility and/or
personal judgement are needed? Find alternative sources to cite too (for example, but not
only, Fang, 2005; 2012).
6. Minority groups and access to Mental Health services
Produce a short literature review on the barriers minority groups in the UK could experience
in accessing mental health services. Conclude with suggestions on how access could be
improved.
7. Psychology of Offenders
Write a short essay on the role media plays in shaping our realities about discrimination and
stereotypes towards offenders.
How are offenders portrayed in television programs, movies, advertisements and/or other
media in the UK, Norway, Mexico and Bolivia? .
Please discuss, using one or more examples to illustrate your argument. Don’t forget to use
reliable, scientific sources to support your claims.
8. COVID–19
Choose two journal articles on the resistance/acceptance of COVID–19 immunization taken
from two differing cultures. Evaluate similarities and differences between the two.
