Youth Participation and Identity

Assignment task: 
In what ways, drawing upon your chosen topic as your focus, can you introduce the subject of youth: 
Issues related to the challenges for youth themselves, in terms of their identity formation and participation in society preparing for adulthood;
the ideological perceptions of youth by the adult world, or external environment.

1. Drawing on the evidence of your reading, with examples to support, in what ways do narratives of youth depicted support to explain the concept of youth and introduce the discourse? Why are young people seen as problematic?

2. Looking at key areas within the discourse, and with reference to relevant literature, present some of the issues faced when looking at youth identities and participation in society. How do schools, or youth settings, contribute to the issues or questions raised? Think about sub-cultures, intersectionality and theoretical perspective offered.

3. Given some of the claims made in the literature and the evidence of practice, what implications may there be for education, as a result? What are your impressions and understanding about the key arguments you have engaged with ?
