Roles of leaders and managers in an organisation

ASSESSMENT

LO3:   Evaluate experiential work-related skills linked to management and leadership roles and requirements within a chosen organisation

LO4:   Analyse the role of the manager in contributing to the strategic aims and direction of a chosen organisation

TASK

Build a journal over time that explores the management and leadership roles within your place of work or through work experience activities. Examine the principles of management and critically evaluate the work-related skills you have observed in practice, outlining improvements that could be made. Explore the competencies demonstrated and consider how your own professional practice could be enhanced (LO3).  Outline the strategic aims of the business and explore within your analysis the role of the manager and how they contribute to the performance and the strategic direction of the business (LO4).

 

  • You will need to include and reference at least 5 academic sources including 3 books and 1 journal to provide supporting evidence and define any key concepts. The size of your journal needs to be approximately 2,000 words. All journals to be submitted online, through Turnitin. You must include both a reference list and bibliography.

  4. Roles of leaders and managers in your chosen organisation:

Interpersonal role: Figurehead, leader, liaison

Informational role: Monitor, disseminator, spokesperson

Decisional role: Entrepreneur, disturbance handler, resource allocator, negotiator

Pick only one example for each role and provide support with literature. Provide an explanation on how they perform these tasks, how they motivate people, how they inspire people, how they link these roles between the members of the organisation and the external environment (could be external members of the organisation)

  1. Examine the principles of management (you can mention Henry Fayol’s 14 Principals of Management and explain 2 or 3 of them) and critically evaluate the work-related skills you have observed in practice, outlining improvements that could be made (link the skills to the principals of management). Explore the competencies demonstrated and consider how your own professional practice could be enhanced

 

  1. Outline the strategic aims of the business and explore within your analysis the role of the manager and how they contribute to the performance and the strategic direction of the business (how role of managers leads to the realisation of aims)
