Part 1 – Art of Activist, Politics, and Propaganda

Propaganda Art – The deliberate spreading of information and ideas to help a movement, institution, or nation.

Activist / Political / Propaganda Art is created to raise awareness, support activists or candidates, Criticize bad deeds, and make a call to action.

  1. Watch the video Art of the Campaign: The Politics of Color Theory.
  2. Search online and locate an Activist, Political, or Propaganda poster to critique and analyze.
      1. These can be local, state, or national.
      2. These can be political advertisements in mailers, magazines, or online.
  3. Analyze the image, answering the following questions.
      1. Briefly explain why you chose your particular image.
      2. What topic/issue does your poster highlight? What icons/imagery are used in the poster?
      3. Everything is important in a poster. Describe at least one small detail that helps convey the message.
      4. Describe the colors that are used. Talk about the implied meanings, emotions, or connection to well-understood social norms. What is the color scheme? (Refer to Chapter 1.4 Color.)
      5. How is text/lettering used in your image?
      6. Describe the visual quality of your image. Is it cluttered or straightforward? Are the lines heavy or thin? Are the shapes simple or complex? Do the colors and lines create contrast or are the elements subtle?
