Unit 7: Patient and Public Participation & Co-creative Initiatives
the importance of involving patients, consumers, and the community at large in designing, implementing, and evaluating healthcare services and systems. This engagement is referred to as ‘patient and public involvement’ (PPI).
Co-creation of healthcare services with a focus on ‘human-centred design’ or ‘user-centred design’ is another area growing in popularity. Patient and public participation is not only about adapting services to the needs of consumers; it’s also about recognising that to improve health outcomes there is a need for a fundamental change in the culture and mindset of healthcare providers, patients and the public in relation to health; grounded in the principles of prevention and health promotion. We need to create a shared responsibility for health and well-being that empowers patients, consumers, the community, business, and governments to collectively, and actively, participate in creating health and wellbeing for all.
