This essay test should not require research or citations. You may quote from the poems or lectures without having to use parenthetical citations. However, poems’ titles should be placed in quotation marks.
Explication is a term that refers to the analysis of literary work. In terms of poetry, it generally means to discuss your interpretation of the meaning of the poem. This is usually done in one of two different ways: discussing line-by-line or stanza-by-stanza in a chronological fashion going from the beginning to the end of the poem; or discussing a thematic concept of the meaning of the poem and then referring to those parts of the poem that back up this interpretation.
