**Anytime you submit an application, you should try to submit as a pdf. If you send as a word or other doc, the formatting you worked so hard to make perfect will upload incorrectly most of the time. When you send as a pdf, the format will stay and no one can alter the document.**

(DUE DATES! As this is due the last week of the semester, this cannot be submitted after Thursday, Dec. 10. Please have it in before 11:59 PM on 12/10)

There are multiple parts to this assignment.

For this assignment, you are going to locate a job or internship you are qualified for and interested in. You will then go through the writing process as if you were going to apply for that job.

Part 1: Find a Job (10)

Using any job board or PSU site, find a job/internship of interest

Highlight or underline ALL the skills and requirements requested that YOU possess

Circle all the skills you do not have

Part 2: Write the Resume (45)

Use the sections of a resume typical of an entry level position (see samples on the PSU career services site: (Links to an external site.)

In the experience section, use some action verbs and numbers to focus on an accomplishment RATHER than a responsibility

Action verbs help tell the story. Example: closed the store; WRITE INSTEAD: Responsibly and successfully closed the store without incident for over 10 months.

Try to use numbers when possible. Because people scan over resumes, numbers stick out and catch their attention. Example: closed out the POS systems; WRITE INSTEAD, Entrusted with end of night sales closure and bank deposits totaling over $15,000 nightly.

In the education sections, focus on relevant course work. Because you may not have much relevant work experience, it is important to sell the theoretical content knowledge. Example:

Pennsylvania State University

Bachelors of Science, Chemistry (GPA: 3.4)

Relevant Course Work:

Organic Chemistry

Physical Chemistry – Quantum

Research Writing

In the skills set – list ALL the skills they request that you possess. You can detail you knowledge base.

Don’t lie

If they ask for python and you only have limited knowledge – write: familiar with concepts of python

On the other hand, if you are an expert, don’t be modest – write: Experienced and knowledgeable with python use and programming

Keep it visually appealing

You want enough white space, but, as an entry level resume it should stay to one (1) page in length

Keep consistent

Your headers should all be the same

Your font and formatting should match

Part 3: Write the Cover Letter (45)

Remember the three parts of a cover letter

The Intro: share the position you are applying for, how you found out about it, and why you think you’re interested in working for them

In the body paragraph, elaborate on something specific that is relevant to the job/what skills or education you have

In the closing, remind them of you contact information and ask for the interview.

Submission:

Please include a copy of your job posting WITH your annotations/highlights. You can print, annotated, and then scan and save as a pdf. Please have ALL three (3) parts in ONE document. Parts 1, 2, and 3 should all be a part of the same pdf and uploaded.
