part 1 (150 words approx)
Read and take notes on TWO articles where interviews are an important (or even only) part of the article. One must come from the list below. You can choose the other or pick a second item from the list. To choose your own—find an article where they interview someone you are interested in knowing more about, or a fan of. If you choose an article not noted here, just include it in your discussion board post.

As you read, think about the questions that were asked. In some cases (like the soccer interview with Socrates), these will be right in the article—you’ll see the question and the answer. In others (as in the “Pearls Before Breakfast” article) you will have to imagine the questions the journalist asked. Mark up your text as you consider what kinds of questions generate useful or interesting answers.

If the interview questions are stated clearly, where are they closed or open ended? When do they indicate a particular line of questioning? When do they wander, more like conversation? Does the interviewer seem active and engaged?

If the questions have to be inferred, think about what kinds of questions you imagine were asked, and how the interviewer approached those they talked to. How are those interviews now integrated into the story? What is their effect?

article 2 pdf (BLIZARD SOCRATES INTERVIEW)

part 2 (150 words approx)
Read and mark up the Rolling Stone article “Sex, Scandal, and the Marching Band.” Then choose one other article to read. As you read, make notes about the writer’s choices. How do they open the article? How do they meet or defy the reader’s expectations about this particular community? How do they use stories? Interviews? How do they close the piece?

Post your notes, along with 2 or 3 ideas for communities you might like to explore in your own writing for this project to the Discussion Board. Give some thought to those communities you participate in all aspects of your life, and also communities where you believe you will have access to some participants to talk with.
