College teams are expected not just to win, but also to be financially viable. Unfortunately, this often means that less profitable sports end up on the chopping block when schools are looking to save money. For example, in July 2020, Stanford University announced it will cut 11 of its varsity sports for financial reasons due to the Pandemic. Although the cancelled sports include less popular ones such as fencing, field hockey, rowing, and wrestling, the cuts send a deeper message that sport, at least at the Varsity level, should be played only if it can produce a return on investment. How do you think this will affect college and high school sports in the future?
