How to Do Well in Discussions
• Respond to the specific questions posed in the discussion.
• Be sure to base your initial Discussion on course materials and use 7th ed. APA citations in every post.
• Write clearly and proofread; errors can lose you points.
• Quality of posts, citations, frequency, and timeliness of posts all factor into your discussion grade. See the Participation Grading Rubric for details.

• You are expected to use the weekly course materials to develop the analysis and support the reasoning. There should be a robust use of the course material. Material used from a source document must be cited and referenced. A reference within a reference list cannot exist without an associated in-text citation and vice versa. Changing words from a passage does not exclude the passage from having quotation marks.

Paraphrase and do not use direct quotations. Paraphrase means you do not use more than four consecutive words from a source document. Removing quotation marks and citing is inappropriate. Instead put a passage from a source document into your own words and attribute the passage to the source document. There should be no passages with quotation marks. Using more than four consecutive words from a source document would require direct quotation marks. Changing words from a passage does not exclude the passage from having quotation marks. If more than four consecutive words are used from source documents, this material will not be included in the grade.

Discussion #1
Virtue in the Workplace
View the video “Mastering Civility: A Manifesto in the Workplace” and read the article “The silent killer of workplace happiness, productivity, and health is a lack of basic civility”. (The article is written by Christine Porath, the woman being interviewed in the video.) Within the article, click on the “Frank Darabont” link and read some of his emails to employees.
In the video, Ms. Porath states that incivility is contagious and that over 25% of people think that employees are uncivil because their leaders are.
1. If you worked for Frank Darabont and you believed in virtue ethics, how would you react to his emails? Or, think about it this way. How would Aristotle react to Darabont? Make sure you use the concepts of virtue ethics to support your reaction.
2. How would you react as a Utilitarian? Is there more than one way in which a Utilitarian could view Darabont’s actions? Make sure you use the concepts of utilitarianism to support your positions.
3. What ethical theory would best support Darabont’s email attitude? In other words, what ethical theory could Darabont say he was following? Support your choice.
4. What do you believe is a leader’s role in shaping the ethical environment of a company and what are some ways in which this role may be carried out? (Question 4 simply requires your opinion so it does not need to be supported with the course materials.)

Discussion #2
Bob’s Prescription for Success
B. A. (Bob) Loney is the new Vice President of Marketing for a large online search engine company, Drug Importers Enterprises (DIE). Bob has been doing some research into how he can increase the company’s revenues and thereby really impress the company brass. During his research he came across an article about Brazilian pharmacies looking for an advertising vehicle to tap into the U.S. consumer market. Further research reveals that this could be a multi-million dollar venture and if DIE plays its cards right, it could make a substantial amount of money given its extensive advertising network. Bob is ecstatic about the possibilities and is excited over what this could mean for his career with DIE.
Before Bob pulls the trigger on this, he decides to consult with his legal department. The legal department tells Bob the following:
1. The shipment of prescription drugs from pharmacies outside the United States to customers in the United States may violate the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and in the case of controlled prescription drugs, the Controlled Substances Act.
2. The FDA cannot ensure the safety and effectiveness of foreign prescription drugs that are not FDA-approved.
3. Imported drugs typically do not meet FDA’s labeling requirements and may not have been manufactured, stored and distributed under proper conditions and may not have been dispensed in accordance with a valid prescription.
4. The government has historically been very lax in enforcing the laws in this area and legally there are a few gray areas. Therefore, the risk of any prosecution may not be significant.
After the consultation with Legal, Bob is unsure about what his decision should be. If you were advising Bob on the ethical implications presented by this case, what would you say to him? Specifically, what ethical problems and issues do you see and how would you tell Bob to resolve them? Make sure to discuss the relationship between legal and ethical requirements. Use ethical theories (more than one) to support your advice to Bob.
