Glen is a 76 year old African American male who presents to the geriatric clinic where you work. His daughter brought him in due to a slight change in his mental status. She is concerned that he is becoming more forgetful, less focused, he has decreased energy, a lack of appetite, and a lack of interest in almost all activities. She states that Glen spends a lot of time sleeping.
After talking with them you learn that Glen’s wife of 56 years recently passed away last year. They were living together in Florida in a retirement community. He was very active there, golfing and walking almost daily. His daughter thought it would be best to relocate Glen back to NY State where she and his grandchildren live, “so we could keep an eye on him and provide support – we are the only family that he has left”.
The doctor has seen him and has not found any medical reason for this change. They ask you to meet with Glen and his daughter to see what your assessment is and what you might suggest.
