Section A – Essay Guide
• The total word count should be 1500. If you feel you need more you can go up to a
maximum of 1650 but never less than 1350
• Only your work will contribute to the word count – quotations, bibliography will not count
• First of all choose your literature
• For Option 1, once you’ve selected your novel, play or poem, choose sections to focus on.
With Macbeth for example, you may choose three different scenes in which women are
represented
• Tip: The play Macbeth represents women in a few different ways, which not only
symbolically characterises how society saw them but at times quite literally

When you reference use the HARVARD STYLE:

• E.g. Cotton, Nancy. (1998) Women Playwrights in England: Renaissance Noblewomen, 1st
edn. Pennsylvania, Bucknell University Press.
• You will collect all references in a separate page titled BIBLIOGRAPHY at the end of your
assignment in alphabetical order
• You can use the bullet point function to collect them and then the SORT function to put
them into order
• If you quote something from other texts, next to it in brackets write the author’s surname,
the date and the page
• E.g. ‘…she went…’ (Haywell 2009, p.92)
