Reflection on language myths

Select any three of the following statements and explain your answers in complete sentences. Devote one short and formal paragraph to each response. Consider that this course hopes to convey that language is always used to perform a function or functions and as such it is used in a specific context and/or domain and with characteristics of a genre or genres.

For instance, a CV/resume is prepared to perform a specific function (e.g., to help someone get a job) and does not look like, nor use the language of, an essay. You are writing in a university setting. Your writing should be formal.

1.People think in language only.

2.Children are taught their first language(s).

3.Written language is superior to spoken language

4.Some groups of people don’t use their language properly.

5.Some people speak their language without an accent.

6.The way groups use their language reflects their intelligence.

7.Language gets contaminated by influence from other languages.

Your answers must clearly relate to the three statements you select and provide reasons for your choices. We are looking for quality and depth in your answers and not length. In each paragraph, you should take a stance in reaction to the statement and then argue for your position, i.e., agree or disagree or somewhere in between, etc. Your argument should be logical. You can provide evidence and examples from secondary sources or from your personal experience.
