Essay guidance:

The course essay will be assessed according to the following criteria:

Development and coherence of arguments.

Use of supporting evidence, especially scholarly work on British politics.

Demonstration of a good understanding of relevant key debates examined on the course.

Degree of reflexivity and critical thinking in relation to arguments and evidence.

Formal presentation of essay: correct referencing and quoting; spelling, grammar and style; layout and visual presentation.

Writing a good essay:

Above all, make sure you answer the question. If you do not answer the question, you cannot possibly get a good mark on the essay.

State your main argument clearly in the introduction. Do not wait until later in the essay or leave it until the conclusion. Give your brief answer to the question and say why. These are the main points that you will develop in the body of the essay.

Do not waste words by going over irrelevant information from the readings. Stick to the points you introduced at the beginning of the essay.

Be critical and analytical. The best essays present a thoughtful analysis of the issues and convey a good understanding of the different (and sometimes opposing) viewpoints reasonable people might hold while making the best case for one’s own perspective.
