Wally tells Monica that the materials will cost £20,000 and that he needs this in advance because it is a trade requirement. This is untrue.

Monica agrees to hire Wally to replace her kitchen. Wally goes to the local DIY store to buy the materials. The DIY store has a small café. Wally orders a full English breakfast. Having eaten his breakfast, Wally leaves the café without paying and then goes round the DIY store, getting the materials for Monica’s kitchen refurbishment. The materials cost him £10,000. Wally knows that he has insufficient credit on his credit card, so he uses his brother’s credit card to pay for the materials. He knows the PIN number, and took the card from his brother’s wallet earlier that day.

When he returns to Monica’s house to start work, Monica is just leaving. She tells Wally that she has left £20 on the kitchen table to pay the gardener, who will be round later that afternoon. When the gardener calls, Wally tells him that Monica did not leave any money for him. Wally then uses the £20 to buy a round of drinks at his local pub when he has finished work for the day. A month after completing the kitchen refurbishment, the kitchen units fall apart and the new tiles that Wally installed crack and come loose from the wall. Monica has to have the kitchen rebuilt by a different tradesman.
