Polk, like many Americans, hoped to acquire which territory from Mexico?
California, New Mexico, and some of the other northern Provinces of Mexico Whigs and other Americans believed that the war was an attempt to spread slavery in the United States. Polk and many Americans, especially those living
in Texas, wanted a secure border
with Mexico.
