Topic: Intervention, Psycho-social Support and Older Adults in the Caribbean

Research Questions

1. What are some of the factors that impede the psycho-social well-being of older adults in the Caribbean?

Note that these factors may be grouped under several categories such as Health care, socialization, security, etc.

Literature for this question should capture general health care (mental, physical, and social) Meeting their basic/human needs
Ageism and its negative impacts (early exit from the workforce, stereotyping, denial of human resources that could have helped to further growth in society, stigmas that prevent continuous education, the sense of losing their dignity

Social exclusion, self-reliance, long-term care, family relations, lack of family support, custodial care, psychological impacts of being in external home facilities, lack of equipment for assisted living, and support thereof, need to be ensured that end-of-life preferences are and will be met

Financial support, inadequate pension schemes, no pension,

Physical health care challenges, lack of health insurance, insufficient facilities to care for the poorer population of older adults, medical care, older adults with disabilities, dementia, and arthritis ( two of the main physical health threats),

Mental health challenges – depression, feelings of failure, and underachievement

Insecurity, physical protection, care in incidents of disaster. elder abuse, interactions with others, suicidal tendencies in older adults, and also the psychological impact of committed and attempted suicides from family members (e.g. Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, and 3 others).

Older adults living in rural areas are more deprived of general care than those living in the urban areas

2. What are the present interventions in place that protect the psycho-social well-being of older adults in the Caribbean?

Literature for this question should

– Policies and institutional intervention from at least 6 but no more than 8 Caribbean countries, including Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, and other countries in the Caribbean

– emphasize and identify gaps

Theoretical framework: – Please choose and/or add theoretical perspectives that will support the various aspect of the research. Other models can be found in the reference list. I expect your input also, thanks, especially for other Caribbean countries. Identify gaps, strengths, and weaknesses in these frameworks.

3. What recommendations can be given to fillip the psycho-social support of older adults in the Caribbean?

– show that invention should be multidimensional to include family, government, NGOs, and the private sector

– Highlight two successful models (Canada, Cayman Islands, etc.
