The concept of professional identity is defined as a sense of self-perception that is determined by the value, norms, and characteristics hence enabling an individual to feel, act, and think like a nurse. In order to build a strong professional identity in nursing, both the psychological wellbeing and identity must be connected. However, faculty discovered that building professionalism is only addressed slightly in nursing schools (Godfrey & Young, 2021, p.363). Nursing students often experience a high degree of role stress in the clinical workplace, and this is a significant predictor of disengagement and burnout. According to Maslach, Jackson, and Leiter, burnout can lead to “emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and reduced personal accomplishment”. Furthermore, it was noted that higher levels burnout were associated with lower levels of patient safety, and with adverse events (Silva Batalha et al., 2019). In order to decrease these risks that nurses have, they must link their personal identity as early as possible to further reinforce their role in health care. Because “simply focusing on a role that everyone expects you to be from the outside, is inadequate” (Jarvis-Selinger et al., 2012); one must be true to themself. Success in incorporating good personal values into nursing identity moderates the detrimental effects of a high-stress workplace, retains job fulfillment, and ultimately brings out more genuine and quality care toward patients.
