Women and Domestic Violence
Introduction
The intended purpose of the project is to assess the mental health and well-being of women because of domestic violence. The project will explore how domestic violence affects the mental health of women in southern America and the approaches that are undertaken to control the social problems. Further, the dissertation will examine the factors that contribute to the development of domestic violence and cultural views, perspectives and attitudes towards the same in this population. Arguments will be provided in the dissertation for the need to ensure that domestic violence is controlled and managed since it has a negative impact in society.
Domestic violence (DV) has a great impact on the abused, members of the family, and people in the social networks of the victim and the abuser (Rollè, Ramon & Brustia 2019). For example, children who experience DV during their growth and development stages become emotionally damaged. Several critical consequences are experienced from the victims of domestic violence that include feeling guilt and shame, helplessness and hopelessness, absence of self-esteem, and challenges in exhibiting negative feelings (Rollè, Ramon & Brustia 2019). Women experience violence, which exists in all societies and related to economic, social, and cultural status. Examples of these forms of violence include religious, economic, sexual, psychological, and physical abuse. While men tend to experience violence that is exerted to them by women, the rate of such violence is low as compared to that of men to women. According to Kaur and Garg (2008), the cost of domestic violence towards women is enormous in society. The proposal will adopt social conflict theory and social learning theory as the key approaches to understand and analyze the data that will be gathered from the research.
Statement of the Problem
The common type of violence that women experience in society is domestic violence (DV) (Karp, Marwah & Manchanda 2015). Such is because DV affects women in all aspects of their life. Recent studies reveal that women between 15 and 49 years have experienced violence, which is estimated at 13-16 percent (Rollè, Ramon & Brustia 2019). The situation is magnified by the fact that domestic violence occurs different genders, age groups, sexual orientations, cultural or economic statuses. Unfortunately, there is massive underreporting of DV because of shame, feeling of possibility for a stop, perpetrator reprisal, and loss of prestigious social appearance. Consequently, there are over 90 percent of DV cases, which are not reported and addressed in society.
Violence disables and kills several women. The practice results in weakening their well-being and affecting their mental health stability (Riess & Fagan 2016). Hence, women tend to lose their social worth and they cannot engage in community-based activities freely. The project focuses on understanding how the mental health and well-being of this population is affected. Considering that women are regarded in most of the social cultures as the key pillars of the home, it is critical to ensure that DV is a concept that is well understood and addressed in society.
