  1. Consider the following lexical items:

  • [tʰw̥ɪtʃ]

(i) Write out the two words indicated above in ordinary orthography.

(ii) What process is represented by the diacritic underneath the [w] in the second of the above words?

(iii) Why does this process occur? Write about 50-100 words.

(iv) State another example of a word in which the above process occurs and transcribe the word in IPA notation.

(v) Construct a rule accounting for the process in (ii).
