Steps for Thorough Analysis of Quotations

[Apply to homework, seminar notes, analysis papers, documented papers, and any task that requires indepth
analysis]

1. Before the Quote

A. Analytical Set Up: a comment from you to set up your purpose for analyzing this quote (like a topic
sentence your argument or claim regarding this idea from the text).

B. Contextualize: if necessary explain what was happening in this part or the text (class reading or
outside source) so the quote makes sense when isolated for analysis. Remember, your readers are
intelligent but they may not have read everything you’ve read.

2. The Quotation Itself

A. Tag, weave, or correctly punctuate your quote (e.g. Camus writes, or weave the quotation into your
own sentence, or use a complete sentence set up with a colon then the quote).

B. The quotation plus correct MLA citation.

3. After the Quote:

A. Interpret what the author is saying in this quotation translate the quotation into your own words;
define or explain key concepts or puzzling words. Only do this if necessarydon’t insult readers’
intelligence.

B. Analyze the idea of the quote. Break down what the author is saying his or her argument/message
in this idea or example. The significance/meaning: direct and implied.

C. Apply the quotation

1. Extend the idea’s reachHow does it apply to new contexts, related phenomena, and so
on?

2. Explain how the extension of the idea workswhy is the application of the quotation to a new situation or context apt, and how might you slightly adapt the idea as you reapply it.

Critique the quotation

1. Evaluate the author’s arguments/ideas and support for the argument or claim. Look at the strengths and/ or weaknesses in the idea and claim. Agree or disagree with the author and explain why.

2. Critique/evaluate the author’s approach, tone, writing style, use of language or specific writing techniques or literacy devices (such as metaphor and symbolism, fiction and/or poetic techniques). What effect did the author’s stylistic choices have enhance and/or distract from his/her argument/messages?

D. Parallel or Association: Can you think of any strong parallels from current events or historical events?

Extrapolate Big Picture: What is the larger significance of what you’ve demonstrated? How can  extrapolate from your work to big questionswhat ethical or practical implications follow from your application or critique of the quotation?
