What is Says What it Does

-This assignment is a reading exercise called “What It Says / What It Does.”
-Your job is to choose any paragraph from the homework for next time, Frederick Denny’s essay “The Prophet’s Sunna as Preserved in the Hadith.” The paragraph should have at least three full sentences in it.

-For each sentence in the paragraph, first quote the sentence in full, and then write in your own words “what it says” and “what it does.”
-“What it says” means to summarize the content of the sentence – what point is it making? What is it trying to get across?
-“What it does” means to explain the sentence’s purpose or function within the essay. For example, you might say that what a sentence does is “provides evidence for the author’s first main reason,” or “summarizes a view with which the author disagrees,” or “provides statistical data to support a point,” or “uses an analogy to clarify the idea in the previous paragraph.”
-This assignment is due by the start of class on Thursday.
