Task 3: Critical Evaluation of the organisations Knowledge Management System

Knowledge Management Value Chain (KMVC)

Insert here your KMVC – Ensure it is the same one used in the presentation (knowledge acquisition)

Provide an explanation of the four stages of your value chain: acquisition, storage, dissemination and application – what does the Hospital Sector in Wales do at each stage? Elaborate on the points made in your presentation. Refer back to the presentation guidance for what you could include in each section.

Here, you should include relevant knowledge typologies – at each stage. You should all be able to refer to Nevis (1995) (knowledge acquisition, knowledge sharing, and knowledge utilization) as the foundation of your KMVC sections, as the areas you cover in your KMVC are very similar to this. For the remaining typologies, please choose the most appropriate one(s) or parts of them. You do not have to be able to apply the entire typology to talk about it.

If you cannot apply a full typology, only certain aspects, that is fine – you can still demonstrate your awareness of the remaining aspects of the typology generally. For example, maybe three of the ‘six knows’ are relevant to your organisation, so discuss what they acquire/store/disseminate/apply in relation to those three, and just acknowledge there are three more ‘knows’ the organisation does not engage with. It may also be that different parts of the typologies apply at different stages of the KMVC.

Be critical in your approach here – do some research into the typologies, try and establish where they have come from/any criticisms there are of them, etc. – don’t just take information at face value. There will be differing amounts of information available on each, of course.

You should also discuss the SECI model specifically in relation to your organisation here. At each stage of the KMVC, what part of the SECI model is applicable? How does the Hospital Sector in Wales go about actioning this part of the SECI model? What do they do or provide to support this? Equally, you could identify that Amazon does not ‘action’ the SECI model very well.

KMVC Support Systems: You need to discuss the support systems that interact with the KMVC at each stage. Take HR, for example, do the activities of HR support or undermine the KM system in the Hospital Sector in Wales? Look at other departments, Finance/IT, etc. You should demonstrate your understanding that KM does not operate in isolation and support systems will have an impact on the success of KM. You can also look at KM enablers here – culture, etc.
