Question 1:

Who are some of the peoples living in Eastern North America in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, what do some of these societies look like, and how did contact shape these groups? Be sure to pull from all your texts, including our Voices of Freedom primary source reader and our Give Me Liberty textbook.

Many historians often recognize the term “nationalism” as a concept that did not exist until the 19th century (that’s the 1800s! – we haven’t gotten there yet!) However, reading the experiences of European colonists in the 16th and 17th centuries tells us that ethnic and racial divides were already apparent. Based on this week’s documents, how can we see both ethnic and racial division increasing, and what are some of the motivations (economic, religious, imperial) that encouraged this separation of peoples by their country or continent of origin? Provide textual evidence.
