Write a research essay on a topic of your choosing, as long as it relates to classical mythology. This essay will draw on the myths, theories, comparisons, and adaptations that have been discussed in class throughout the term.

This is your opportunity to explore in more depth a topic that really interests you! It can be anything as long as it relates to classical mythology. Once you have selected your topic, you need to decide what type of essay you wish to write. You have three (3) choices:

A contextual essay – you can examine one Greek myth or character within its original context. You should use one or more of the theories we have discussed in class to analyze the myth.
A compare & contrast essay – you can examine how one mythological character or topic is portrayed in two different sources. One source must be a Classical Greek myth; the other source may be from any contemporaneous culture (must be different from Assignment 1).
A contemporary essay – you can compare a Greek myth with one (or a few) of its adaptations in 20th or 21st century western society.
Once you select your topic and essay type, you must obtain approval from your instructor before proceeding with your essay.
