Relevance – You should respond directly to the quotation and state how you will address the issues it raises across the different parts of your essay

Quality of argument – a good argument combines your personal response with wider knowledge of the text(s) and contexts/comparisons

Use of evidence – quotations from primary and secondary reading need to be introduced and analysed. Don’t stick them in without a sentence of introduction beforehand and explanation/discussion after.

Presentation – covers your standard of English (spelling, paragraphing, punctuation sentence structure) and referencing. Both are equally important.

Research – use of the texts listed in this handbook, and recommended in lectures/seminars, will be rewarded.
