There are many times when individuals have a bias toward a specific group of people, and they are unaware that they have this bias. This bias may affect the way the individual interacts with others, so it is important to examine areas for possible bias so that we can work towards eliminating them.

Each team member will complete the following:

Access Project Implicit. (https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/takeatest.html)

Read through the disclaimer and click “I wish to proceed.”

Choose one bias test based on something with which you are comfortable and one test for something with which you are not comfortable.

Complete each test.

Review your results.

Discuss your results with your teammates and consider the following questions:
– What was your experience taking these tests?
– What was surprising to you about the results? If nothing, explain why.
– How do you think these results will (or will not) help you in working with clients who may represent the population you chose to test your bias?

Part II:
A summary of the team discussion. Include the following:
– Examine how the similarities and differences may affect multicultural counseling between different counselors.
– Explain what each team member has discovered as areas of improvement based on this experience.
– Describe each person’s plan for improving in those areas.

**Please use the following teammates’ responses in paper as well-

Deidre:
Took two tests – Religion
Was not uncomfortable with any in particular test.
Moderate automatic preference for Judaism over Islam, was a bit confused at the tests and had to read directions a few times understand. Unsure how the results were affected, hit one wrong answer. Did not feel she understood the test overall. Identifies as a Christian. Feels she does not feel one way or the other but understands that this may be revealing unconscious bias. Not sure about the accuracy. Did not feel bad or good but accepted the results.
Second test – Trans/Cis
Data suggests weak preference for trans over cisgendered people. Test was a bit confusing, felt the results were not accurate because of that. Directions did not exactly register due to not reading the bold printed text. Was very focused on getting it right, rather than going too fast. Felt as though she was very conscious of the test and the results.

Shea:
Took two tests, Trans/Cis gendered test and Asian American Test
Tests made her anxious, felt we needed to get accurate results and get the “questions correct”. On first test, there was no automatic preference between Cis and Transgendered people. On the second test, results indicated a moderate preference for European Americans as “American” and Asian Americans as “Foreign”. On second test, felt she messed up quite a bit on the answers. Kept getting caught on different letters when prompted to click E or I based on the descriptor words.
Felt the tests were also a bit confusing, and had a hard time with directions here and there. Kept getting tripped up on words switching and pictures. Only took issue with Asian American results.

The results will help us because we can identify our biases and be sure to be conscious of them going into working with clients of all backgrounds. This will allow us to eliminate, for the most part, any potential of prejudice or bias against clients of differing backgrounds.
It may be a good idea for all budding counselors to complete all tests listen, rather than just two, to aid themselves in becoming more aware of any implicit biases.

Include a minimum of two sources per team member.
