NURS 310 CASE STUDY GUIDELINES

Answer each question thoroughly. The length of your answer to each question should be no more than one page. Only professional references may be used (except question 1 part 2). Professional references (sources) area articles less than 5 years old from professional journals, professional textbooks less than 5 years old, governmental websites, institutions of higher learning websites, and position papers from professional healthcare organizations. Also, please cite all references in the text (body) of your answer and include a complete list of all references used on a separate reference page at the end of the case study. This is NOT a formal paper. Therefore, you are not required to include a title page or page formatting such as headings. In fact, you may answer the questions directly on this document. The only APA requirements are correct citations and a separate reference page at the end of the case study. This assignment meets the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Standards 1-5.Question 1The Influence of Cultural and Health Belief Systems on Health Care Practices According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 80% of the people in the world use Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) for treatment of common illnesses. Select a common illness, such as upper respiratory infection, arthritis, or a similar condition, and1. Describe a selected CAM therapy/practice that patients might use to treat it. Many people have used complementary alternative medicine to treat most respiratory diseases before the invention of pharmaceutical drugs. For instance, people in China have managed viral pneumonia using Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Viral pneumonia is an acute respiratory tract infection that is highly contagious and often leads to death if untreated. Viral pneumonia has led to some outbreaks like severe acute respiratory syndrome in 2003, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus(MERS-CoV), Influenza A (H1N1) in 2009, and the recent severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in 2019 (Lin et al., 2019). Studies haveshown that the formulation of TCM, like herbal treatment, manages viral infection by inactivation the virus to prevent it from penetrating the body cells or inducing the release of interferons to inhibit its replication. However, excess immune response and release of inflammatory cytokines cause lung injury and viral infection. Herbs like Gardenia jasminoides J., Andrographis paniculate, Geranium sangui

Ephedra sinica Stapf, Morus alba L., and Cinnamomum cassia (Xi et al., 2022).
When in the correct concentration and dosage, it can aid in controlling the virulence
of the disease.
2. What is the cost of the selected CAM therapy/practice described in part 1? You must include an actual price and state where you obtained this information. You may use a quoted price from a business that provides services/access to your chosen CAM
therapy/practice. Use of herbal can be cheap or expensive depending on where they are and their occurrence in the environment. Reports have revealed that the cost of antibiotic treatment for children with pneumonia in forty-two of the poorest countries is about six hundred million US dollars annually (Cao et al., 2020). Also, about twenty-one million occur each year in China. Using conventional medicine could be unaffordable to people living below the poverty level, while it is unpredictable to determine the occurrence of disease,
especially in people living in congested environments. TCM follows a specific
methodological and theoretical disease cause leading to diagnosis and treatment. They
use herbs like Tanrequing, Reducing, and Chuanhuning injections to treat childhood
pneumonia. These drugs use readily available herbs that are cheap to acquire (Lin et al., 2019). Additionally, some locals have planted some of them within their compound. As a result, mixing a standard concoction could not cost any money for people that understand the drug interaction.

3. What is the efficacy of the selected CAM therapy/practice described in part 1? Reference a journal article less than 5 years old in your answer.
Researchers have reported TCM to have reliable therapy for centuries. Asian countries like China have widely used herbal medicine for viral pneumonia using the plant elements like roots, flowers, fruit, rhizomes, seeds, and leaves. After experimentations, scientists tested the drugs’ efficacy against the viruses (Xi et al., 2022). The TCM derives active compounds with antiviral elements that inhibit viral attachment to cell
internalization to minimize its replication and spread. Research has shown that baicalin and resveratrol have exhibited antiviral activity against plaque assays in mouse models.
In addition, the clear drugs heat, resolve toxins and induce sweating to relieve panting
(Cao et al., 2020). Experimentations have shown the success of the drugs in managing
viral pneumonia after a few dosages of the herbal treatment.
4. How effective do you think the selected CAM therapy/practice described in part 1 is
compared with allopathic medicine?
Scientists have placed modern technology while developing allopathic medicine. The
standard drug development process includes discovery and development, preclinical
research, clinical research, and FDA review steps. The process allows for proper testing and ensures that it is safe and does not cause adverse side effects that deteriorate a person’s health. However, TCM drugs are passed information from the generation of people who use them. Therefore, scientists have not determined whether their usage causes adverse side effects after years of using them. However, prolonged use in treating

the disease for centuries indicates they effectively manage viral pneumonia (Xi et al.,
2022). Allopathic medicines are effective in treating viral pneumonia, but their
incidences cause the drug resistance to give TCM an advantage.
Question 2
Religion, Culture, and Nursing
In providing nursing care for the dying patient from the Hindu culture, discuss four (4) cultural considerations the nurse should include in the plan of care? Please reference a journal article less than 5 years old in your answer.
The best way for a Hindu believer to die is when surrounded by their friends and family who are singing, praying, and reading sacred verses for them. They believe that suffering may be a way of resolving wrong actions from a current or previous life (Ghosh & BK, 2022). As a result, they view it as working out their spiritual growth. Therefore, when caring for a Hindu
dying patient, it is essential to ensure that the medical practices do not interfere with their spiritual preparedness for the afterlife. First, nurses should add modesty and unique hygienic practices when caring for them. For instance, they require total privacy during physical examinations and bed baths. Also, they ask for a limit on the number of nurses caring for them and expose only the part that requires bathing. Also, they need a body bath before praying because they believe physical cleansing is associated with spiritual cleansing. Second, they require spiritual care. Hindus have sacraments that play a role in their spiritual care to secure their welfare and prepare them for the afterlife (Patel et al., 2020). Additionally, they need water from puja to comfort the dying person.

Family members will perform rituals and ceremonies during the dying phase and at the time of death. For instance, the dying person may wish for a small picture of the family god or a statue by their bedside. Older people start their day with prayer, intensifying as they near death. As a result, the nurse will need to know their schedule to give them a bedside wash before theypray. Similarly, the families may wish to light a small oil lamb and burn incense in their room
(Ghosh & BK, 2022). Finally, most Hindus prefer dying in their homes. Therefore, thenurseshould prepare for relocation when the person’s health deteriorates (Patel et al., 2020). However,if the patient dies in the hospital and there is no room to conduct the private rituals, the nursemust decide to release the deceased back to their family as soon as possible.
